Radiometric Dating Creationism
What aspect of Christian Fundamentalism annoys you most?
Young Earth Creationism
Childhood indoctrination
Civil influence
Oppression of homosexuals and those of other religions
Self-righteousness
The ‘Hellfire and Bimstone’ preaching
For me, it has to be Young Earth Creationism. When we’ve got fossils, radiometric dating, geological formations, asteroids, background radiation, expandig universe, etc.all of which point to the Earth being billions of years old and evolution being a proven process, these people are simply in denial of reality. Fair enough, assert that God exists, that’s not a verifiable difinitive. Argue that God caued the Big Bang if you will. However, I have no patience for those that deny reality over bronze age myths.
First off I think that people are entitled to their beliefs regardless of religion, and in all fairness to Christians in general, the fringe elements within their ranks seem to be the ones who get most of the attention for which all of them continuously keep getting bloody noses which is far from fair.
Having said that however anytime any person from whatever belief or non belief begins to disseminate religious ideology as “science” then they should be challenged.
As a former Christian preacher/ teacher for many years I understand how they think but I must say that even in my most ardently believing days, I never saw the need to preach the gospel of fire and brimstone to get results but rather focused on the “good news” as I understood it.
I remember this one time when I addressed a large group of about 150 soldiers where 43 of them became believers during–of all things–a Sunday school class.
I guess as an agnostic today what bothers me most is this new breed of militant believers who preaching from fear quite often become just outright hostile.
